Ms. Brenda Siems

4th  Grade Classroom/ 5th and 6th grade math

Extra Duties:

I have been given the privilege of teaching summer school math.  I have taught summer school for 3 years.

Education:

I received my Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  In 1993 I completed my Master’s degree in elementary education at Wayne State College.

Job Experience:

I have taught at Elgin for 29 years.

My life:

I was born on a farm in Minnesota.  Well, actually I was born in a hospital and grew up on a farm.

I have two children, Luke and Lacy.

Luke graduated from Hastings College in May of 2006.  He took an assistant manager job at Walgreens in Norfolk.  It’s very nice to be able to visit him more often.

Lacy is enrolled in the nursing program at Central Community College in Grand Island.  She got engaged at Christmas and we are now busy planning a wedding for this October.

My remaining ‘child’ at home is Lucy, my golden retriever, a wonderful friend and companion.  (For those of you that know me well, Duke, my 13 year old pug, passed away in September.)

My favorite things to do lately are of course walking Lucy and visiting my children.  Four TV programs that I hate to miss are House, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and Lost.  I still do a few home improvement type things but not as much as before.

Teaching goals:

My goals are to give students the skills to build a strong foundation on which to build future learning.  I raise my academic expectations each quarter and make sure students know what they are.  At the fourth grade level, students must start taking responsibility for their learning.

We emphasize a classroom community in which everyone cares about and helps each other.  We do like to have a little fun once in a while too.

Having survived cancer, I have a greater appreciation of the opportunity I have to spend my days with kids.
