2008...Another Brick In The Wall

by Rita Heithoff

September 06, 2007

The Yearbook/Web students have started on their 2008 yearbook.  This year's staff includes seniors;Shane Voborny, Mikayla Hoffart, Kyle Faust and juniors; Alex Kinney and Sam Janssen.  They've chosen their theme for the year, "2008, Another Brick In The Wall"  The book will be created using this theme throughout.

The students have worked on their cover and divider page designs and have those completed.  The students have also sent out the ad mailings to all of the businesses who support our yearbook.  We've been a little limited since our computer lab was flooded, but the laptops are getting us through.  The students have mastered how to design the yearbook online with Josten's Yearbook Avenue and are continually working on their pages.  Not only do they design the pages, but have to make sure pictures are taken, create write-ups, list awards and include any important information that may be on their page.

Last year's book has been sent in the Nebraska High School Press Association for evaluation and the students won an "Award of Merit" and a "Golden Kernel Award" for "Coverage".  Congratulations 2007 Staff!

When we get the computer lab back, the students will also be creating web articles and slide shows. Until then I'm doing the slideshows, so be patient, I eventually get them on the web page. To create a slide show the students choose 10-30 photos from our collection of several thousand photos.  These photos are named according to section, event, person and action.  An example would be "BBB-Verd-Andrew-ft".  This translates to Andrew shooting a free throw at the Verdigre, boys basketball game.  All of the photos that we might use for the yearbook, web or sell to students is named in this manner.  That's quite a job all by itself!

When the elementary, computer lab is up and running again this will be the process the students will follow to create a web slide show. After choosing their photos for a web slide show, the students email them to Mrs. Heithoff to shrink the photos from 3000x2000 pixels to the web size of 640x400 pixels.  By shrinking the photos, they download quickly and you can see the entire picture at once. Mrs. Heithoff saves the photos to the students' web files and the students may begin creating their slide shows.  After they have uploaded their photos into a slide show, the slide show is entered into an article.  The article is submitted to Mrs. Heithoff for final approval and posted to the web page under "Pictures".  We have academic, activities and sports slide shows and will be adding more as the year progresses.

We will be taking orders for photo folders.  We will save all photos we have of a student who orders a folder. This includes sports, activities, academic, group and team photos.  We save any photo that highlights the student and we think they would like.  The students may bring in a CD and download this folder at the end of the year for $10.00.  The only limit on photos is how many the CD will hold.  These photos are the original 3000x2000 pixels format and may be printed at home or at any digital, photo, printing center such as Walmart.
