Sixth Grade Art

Scratchboards

by Rita Heithoff

February 21, 2008

The Sixth Grade Art class has just finished their unit on scratchboard.  The Elements of Art emphasized in this lesson were line and pattern. The students choose to do animals for their subject and were allowed to pick the animal they wanted to depict.  Their animals were required to have a lot pattern such as fur, scales or feathers  They looked through several art books to find the creature they wanted.  The class then spent several periods sketching their design onto newsprint ( a thin, inexpensive, paper used to print newspapers).

After sketching they were ready to begin. They taped their sketch onto the scratchboard ( a thin board covered with a white coating and then black ink) and traced over the design with a pen.  The pen dents the scratchboard under the sketch and the student can see their design on the scratchboard.  The Sixth grade used either a scratch stylus(or as we called them, tack on a stick) or an e-xacto knife to gently scratch the black ink off and reveal the white underneath.  The students use short scratching strokes to remove the ink hence the name "scatchboard".  Click on the slideshow to view their work.
