Groundhog Shadow Day

9 students participate in annual event

Groundhog Shadow Day for Elgin Public students came late this year.  But this week it was the students seeing shadows, not the groundhog!  Each year the Northeast Nebraska AHEC program sponsors a hands-on health career morning followed by shadowing opportunities in the afternoon.  The morning sessions included an introduction to surgery (including suturing), a tour of the LifeNet helicopter and discussion with its crew, a model of the use of forensic science, an involved role play of teamwork in an emergency setting, EMT action (students practiced inserting a breathing tube), and rehab central.  All sessions were given by health care providers working in those fields.

In the afternoon the nine students in attendance from Elgin Public shadowed in a variety of areas.  The following is a list of students and their shadow areas:  Jennifer Bush, nurse practitioner; Becki Schindler, optometrist; Kayla Hoffart, EMT; Amanda Hemenway, occupational therapist; Tonya Wiegand, recreational therapist; Caitlin Mortensen, anesthesia; Ayli Carrero, nursing pediatrics; Kara Zegers, dental hygienist; and Amber Hoffart, veterinarian.  They shadowed in both hospital and clinical settings.  All the girls felt as though it was a learning experience.  For many it solidified their interest in pursing a health care career!
