EHS Hall of Fame Inductees 2013
On January 18, 2013 during halftime of the boys Basketball Game Elgin held it Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. This yearâs 2013 EHS Hall of Fame inductions were Gary Wilkinson a 1961 Elgin Public School Graduate, the 1964 Undefeated Football team and the 1967 undefeated Football Team.
Gary Wilkinson
Gary Wilkinson, a 1961 graduate of Elgin Public School, will be inducted January 18, 2013, at the Elgin Public- Pope John basketball game. Wilkinson received numerous letters and several distinguished awards throughout his involvement in football, basketball and swing choir.
Throughout his football career, he was a four- year letter winner. He was also recognized by the Omaha World Herald as an All-State football player in 1959 and 1960. Wilkinson was also named All- American by the Wigwam Wiseman of America and The Sporting News. He also earned a spot on the National High School All-American team; he was one of sixteen Nebraska student-athletes to earn that honor. Wilkinson was tabbed to play in a national football game held in Oklahoma to display the best high school seniors in the nation. In addition, he also helped lead his team to a Sandhills Conference Championship in 1959.
On the basketball court, Wilkinson also played an integral role as a four-year letter winner. He was a team captain and played a significant role each year. Wilkinson also participated in swing choir and earned a superior rating for his singing.
Mr. Gary Wilkinson continued to live in the Elgin area after graduation and was very proud of his years at Elgin High School. He continued to support the school activities during his time in Elgin.
1964 Undefeated Football Team:
The 1964 football team achieved its first perfect football season in over twenty-five years when they closed their 1964 season with a 45-32 win over Orchard. They finished the season 7-0. The Eagles became the 8-man champions of the Sandhills Gateway Conference. Some highlights of the 64 season were beating previously unbeaten Clearwater and finishing the season rated number one in the Norfolk Daily News. Some individual statistics were as follows: leading tackler was John Kuester; leading scorers were Ron Connick and Dave Faubel; rushing leaders were Dave Faubel (averaging 7.2 yards a carry) and Ron Connick (averaging 6.9 yards a carry)

1967 Undefeated Football Team:
Thirty-six players checked out gear to start the 1967 season, twenty-one of whom were returning lettermen. The team opened the season in commanding fashion beating Platte Center 19-0. They closed the season with a record of 10-0, beating Wheeler Central 36-20 in the East-West Sandhills Gateway Championship Game. This marked the eighteenth straight win, as they had won all of their games but the opener in 1966. It was the teamâs third title in four years, and they had won twenty-nine of their past thirty-one conference games. There were no playoffs in 1967, but the Eagles were rated fifth in the state in the Omaha World Herald and number one in the Norfolk Daily News.
Some individual statistics are as follows:
Dale Iburg led the team with 1080 yards rushing.
Doug VonBonn had 608 yards rushing.
Vance and Dean Wilkinson were the leading tacklers.
