English 9 and Kindergarten Join Forces to Create Stories
This year, our busy Freshmen took a break from the normal routine of English 9 to try something new. Inspired by an activity from both St. Boniface/Pope John and Boone Central, the students decided to work with members of the kindergarten class. Their goal? To create children's stories. The activity served as a perfect introduction to the short story unit the older students were about to embark upon. It was also an excellent review of the grammar concepts they had just conquered.
The process started with an interview. Each Freshman was paired up with two younger students so they could become acquainted. They discussed a variety of topics, including some of their favorites. After compiling their information, the class made a second trip to the elementary. At this time, they began discussing story ideas. The younger students shared their ideas.
Next, the Freshmen used plot lines and story boards to plot their stories. Following the revision stages, they were ready to begin illustrating. Students were allowed to use a combination of their own original artwork as well as clip art to create scenes in their books.
Since the kindergarten class consisted of nineteen students when they began, and the Freshmen boasted a mere nine, all students were responsible for at least two books. Two students went above and beyond the call of duty and volunteered to collaborate on a third.
On Tuesday, May 5, the Freshmen shared their final products with their kindergarten co-authors. The class period consisted of some great stories, a lot of smiles and some new friendships.
Thank you, Freshmen, for your efforts, and thank you to the kindergarten classroom for some terrific ideas!
