In 7th grade math, we are currently studying 3-dimensional figures and how to calculate surface area.  To help visualize the process, the students were asked to create a net of different shapes to see what 2-D shapes make up the 3-D figure.  We discussed applications of surface area such as the paint needed for a room, the square footage for carpeting the floor and walls (in case you think that 70’s trend is coming back), wrapping a present, or creating packaging materials like shoe boxes or pizza boxes.  Their work is proudly displayed in the classroom!
