The Seventh Grade Art class has been hard at work on still life drawing. They began the project sketching a still life in the classroom on newsprint with an H pencil. They were to draw 3-5 objects and fabric. They completed a series of thumbnail sketches to determine the composition or layout of their drawing. They may choose from a horizontal, vertical, diagonal or triangular composition for their drawing
After they settled on their composition they began a larger sketch and practiced their shading with the B pencil and blending stump. They were to include 3-5 values or different shades of gray in their drawing. B pencils are soft drawing pencils that draw very dark and blend easy to create values. Value and contrast is what let's us see images in 3-D.

After they practiced shading, they drew their design on white paper with the H pencil. H pencils are a hard lead pencil that draws very light so it can be easily erased to make corrections. After they had drawn out their composition on white paper they began shading the entire composition.
