American Civics Meeting Minutes 2023-03-15

 

Elgin Public Schools 

American Civics Committee Hearing 

Distance Learning Room, EPS 

March 15, 2023 

Lisa Welding committee Chairman called the American Civics Hearing to order at 7:05 on March 15,  2023. The hearing was held in the IT Room of Elgin Public High School. 

Committee members present were Ron Bode, and Lisa Welding. Luke Hinkle was absent. Superintendent  Brockhaus, 4th Grade teacher, Trent Ostransky and High School History teacher, Brandon Callahan. No  Public visitors in attendance. 

Mr. Callahan went over what he has been teaching in his classroom from current events every Friday to  learning the first 10 amendments of the constitution. He has many learning activities that his classroom  does during the year. Brandon has the 8th and 11th graders take a citizenship test. He will be taking  students to a Capital Forum in Lincoln this year. 

Mr. Ostransky 4th grade class have many activities that they do for Americanism. He asks his class the  how and why. They learn about Columbus Day, Veteran Day, Thanksgiving, Pearl Harbor, Martin Luther  King, Naturalization, Bill of Rights are just some of the things they learn during the school year. 

The Committee reviewed Policy 203.06 Board Committees, 201.01 Board Powers and Responsibilities,  and 601.11 Citizenship.  

They reviewed and completed the American Civics Checklist. The Elgin Public School District is in  compliance with the American Civics requirements. 

The next American Civics meeting will be in October of 2023. 

Meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
