2014 6th Grade Art Masks
Paper Mache
The Sixth grade Art class recently completed their paper mache masks. They were assigned to create a mask with strong features, color, texture and pattern.
We discussed zentangling and tribal masks for ideas. The class looked at examples of Aboriginal art from Australia and how they used pattern in their artwork.Students completed sketches before beginning the mask. The students used a plastic mask mold to construct their work on. They dipped strips of paper into a water/glue mixture and applied this to the mold. After applying several layers the mask was left to dry.
For the next phase students created the features by taping rolled up paper towels to make lips, nose and eyes onto their mask. Several more layers of paper mache was added over the features. Once this layer dried the students were ready to begin decorating.
Students gave the masks a base coat of paint and begin adding details with more paint, markers, glue and beads to name a few. They were allowed to use a variety of materials to create hair such as pipe cleaners, tissue paper and/or feathers. After they finished a hanger was attached to display their work.
