Paper Mache Animals

by Rita Heithoff

September 20, 2007

The 8th Grade is currently creating paper mache animals.  The students had the choice of making a fish or a bird.  We have several fish, a penguin, an eagle and a beaver in progress.  The students drew sketches of their creature from different angles before starting.

To begin a sculpture the students crunch newspaper into balls and tape them together to form the body.  Details such as fins and wings may be cut from cardboard and taped onto the body.  More newspaper is added to "flesh" out the animal and form the muscle structure.  After the structure is complete the "skin" is added.  The students dip strips of newspaper into a water and glue mix.  Excess glue is wiped off by running the strip through their fingers.  The strips are applied to the sculpture.  Several layers are applied and left to dry.  After 5-8 layers are applied and the sculpture is hard, the students may begin decorating.

Students have their choice of paint, tissue paper, pipe cleaners, beads, buttons and glitter, to name a few, to decorate their sculpture.  Click on the slideshow to view their work.
