The Sonic Rangers

Physics students have started the year analyzing the basics of motion.  To aid their learning we spent several days outside using hand held sonic rangers attached to the calculator to map their speed and movement.  Activities included trying to match a motion graph and analyzing different aspects of the graphs.  These graphs helped the students to visualize the displacement, direction, velocity and acceleration of the motion.  So far the studies have been limited to 1-dimensional motion but soon we’ll start 2-dimensional motion and build stomp rockets to reinforce those concepts.
