Physics Students Study Projectile Motion
Launching Stomp Rockets
Thanks to the nice weather this week, physics students have been outside quite often to experiment with concepts of projectile motion. We are currently studying the effects of mass and launch angle on the range and time of flight of projectiles. Students had the opportunity to design a stomp rocket and launch it to see how different variables affected the range. The rockets were usually quite simple, made from construction paper, tape, and a marble for added mass. Preliminary testing showed Cordell had the most aerodynamic design, but after some tweaking and thanks to a tail wind, Nash's "Eagle" prevailed with a school record of 96 yards. The students were surprised by the distance traveled by the rockets and all had a great time learning about projectile motion.
