Regular November School Board Meeting

November 12, 2008 7:30 PM
President Heithoff called the regularly scheduled November 2008 Elgin Public School Board Meeting to order at 7:30 PM. Board members present were Steve Heithoff, Stan Heithoff, Laurie Waterbury, Mary Bauer, and Scott Beckman. Bruce Anderson was absent for roll call, and arrived at 7:34 PM. Also present were Interim Superintendent Lee Hall, Principal Fisher, Dennis Morgan of the Elgin Review.
President Heithoff reminded everyone that a copy of the Nebraska open meeting law was posted in the meeting room.
School board meeting notice complied with Meeting Notice Policy # 204.07.
Bauer moved, Waterbury second, to approve consent agenda items #4- approve the minutes from the October regular and special School Board Meetings, item # 5-adopt the agenda, item #6- accept the financial report, and item # 7- pay the board bills. The motion passed with a 5 to 0-yes vote. Anderson absent.
President Heithoff recognized visitors and there was no correspondence for this meeting.
Anderson arrived at 7:34 PM.
Principals Report- Mr. Fisher reported on the Veterans Day Program, Parent Teachers Conferences and meeting with Father Andrews and Principal Betty Getzfred. Mr. Fisher also presented information concerning the NSAA district meeting, NVC athletics director meeting, NVC vocal clinic, and the EHS One-Act team. The Lady eagles had concluded their volleyball season and a girls’ basketball meeting had been held.
Mr. Hall reported on attending a reading workshop in Lincoln, filing state reports, and reviewed possible legislative issues.
Congratulations to the Elgin Eagles Football Team, Coach Wells, Coach Eisenhauer, and Coach Simpson, on their undefeated regular season and District Championship. The Board also recognized Nathan Niewohner on his selection to All-State Choir.
The Board reviewed the initial auditors report.
The Board received notice that the Nebraska Department of Education has approved District 18’s Tech Plan and e-rate determination.
Policy manual sections 100 and 200 were reviewed.
Beckman moved, Stan Heithoff second, to approve option enrollment requests for three students for the 2009/2010 school year. The motion passed with a 6 to 0 yes vote.
A preliminary bid/cost estimate for elementary bathroom renovation was reviewed.
Student enrollment information and projections were reviewed and discussed.
Principal Fisher gave an update on the start of the winter activity season.
President Heithoff requested that the Board Self Evaluation forms that were included in the board packets be completed and returned for discussion at the December meeting.
Mr. Hall discussed the annual financial report and auditors report.
An area meeting concerning the future of small schools will be held next Tuesday evening at Wheeler Central Schools. Mr. Hall and three board members will attend.
The Board received a Pre-School update from Mr. Hall.
Waterbury moved to enter closed session to discuss Superintendent Evaluation, to prevent the needless injury to the reputation of an individual, and that no individual has requested a public meeting. Anderson second. Motion passed on a 6 to 0 yes vote.
President Heithoff then restated the motion to enter closed session to discuss Superintendent Evaluation, to prevent the needless injury to the reputation of an individual, and that no individual has requested a public meeting.
The board entered closed session at 9:42 PM to discuss superintendent evaluation.
The board returned to open session at 10:29 PM.
The next regularly scheduled Elgin Public School Board meeting will be Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 7:30 PM, in the distance learning room, Elgin Public High School.
Bauer moved to adjourn at 10:32 PM. Beckman second. Motion passed with a 6 to 0 yes vote.
