August 12, 2010, 7:30 PM
President Steve Heithoff called the regularly scheduled August 12, 2010 Board Meeting to order at 7:30 PM. Board members present were Mary Bauer, Ryan Reestman, Steve Heithoff, Stan Heithoff, Kim Wells, and Laurie Waterbury. Also present were Superintendent Steve Dennis, Principal Jimmy Feeney, Heidi Rethmeier and Dennis Morgan from the Elgin Review.
President Heithoff led the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Heithoff reminded everyone that a copy of the Nebraska Open Meetings Law was posted in the meeting room.
School board meeting notice complied with Meeting Notice Policy #204.07.
Bauer motioned and Wells second to approve the Consent Agenda #5- Minutes of Previous Meeting,#6- Adopt the Agenda, #7- Financial Report, #8- Board Bills. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Visitors were recognized and there were no patron comments. There were no reports of standing committees.
Principal Feeney reported on a school improvement meeting, how technology is being used, Map Testing, At Risk Students, and Administrator Days. He also reported on the 2010-2011 Schedule, the attendance agreement for all students attending classes at EPS, and the NVC Coaches, Sponsors and Administrators meeting.
Wells motioned and Stan Heithoff second to approve the Bullying Prevention Policy #504.20 on Second Reading. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Wells motioned and Waterbury second to approve the purchase of a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan SE SXT from Jonny Dodge for $20,570. A 2002 Ford 15 passenger van will be traded in with the purchase. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Reestman moved and Wells second to transfer $10,000 from the General Fund to the Lunch Fund. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Waterbury motioned and Bauer second to approve the purchase of 3 promethean boards at a cost of $12,397. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Superintendent Dennis updated the Board about NCLB (No Child Left Behind), Administrator Days, ESU Administrator Days, and upcoming meetings. Summer maintenance that is completed are the playground and surfacing, campus security, testing of football light poles, and floors are completed in the entrance of the gym and gym area. Items to be completed soon are replacement of wooden doors, which will replace hoods in the new storage area, bus cameras installed, spraying of parking lots, over seeding of preschool area and playground, and fertilizing of football field by Green Thumb. Mr. Dennis shared that the NE State Accountability Reports will be available, to the public, online on Aug. 25th. He also presented the school census which showed a slight increase. Unencumbered funds for the year were also discussed.
Mr. Dennis gave board members information concerning a preliminary 2010-2011 Budget. Discussion was held.
Bauer motioned and Waterbury second to go into closed session to discuss staff negotiations, to protect public interest. Motion carried, vote 6-0. President Heithoff restated the motion and the Board went into closed session at 8:40 PM.
The Board entered open session at 9:37 PM.
Stan Heithoff moved and Bauer second to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried, vote 6-0. The meeting adjourned at 9:45 PM.
The Budget Workshop will be held on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 7:30 PM in the Distance Learning Room at EPS.
The Budget Hearing will be held on September 8, 2010 at 7:10 PM and the Levy Hearing will be held at 7:20 PM in the Distance Learning Room at EPS. The Regular September Meeting will be held at 7:30 PM, immediately following the hearings, at the same location.
