The Environmental science class
is jumping right into the new school year by kick-starting the
school-wide recycling efforts! They have been busy painting
new recycling and reusing boxes for classrooms to replace worn out
or missing boxes. They have also been writing up details for
a new plan to take care of the recycling duties. The new plan
will involve more students throughout the high school and will be
done on a more regular basis. The class has also been
brainstorming ways to make plastic recycling at lunch more feasible
for the school. To finish off our efforts to "Go Green!" the
class will research composting and biodegrading processes using red
wiggler worms and hope to build a small worm farm with which they
can study the process.
Saving trash from landfills like this one near Jackson, NE is our goal. It's estimated that 40-50% of waste thrown in landfills can be recycled. This landfill takes in 900,000 lbs of trash per DAY. There is a lot of room for more recycling!

Thank you to everyone who
continued to use the GreenFiber bins over the summer. In June
we collected more recyclable cellulose products (1.68 tons) than in
any month since we received the GreenFiber bins last October.
To date, we have saved 12.12 TONS of paper products from sent
to the landfill. This has earned us around $250 to be put
towards further Green projects.
Ryan paints to let everyone know which boxes contain recyclable materials.
