In 1800, Count Alessandro Volta demonstrated the first battery. The Technology class created a similar battery using supplies found in any common household. The batteries consisted of quarters, foil, and paper soaked in a vinegar-salt solution. After the students built their batteries and let them set for a few minutes, they hooked up a small LED and enough electricity was generated to light it. Of course this may not seem spectacular by today’s standards but 200 years ago it was pretty impressive. This project helps to illustrate the workings and practical nature of batteries that seem to power many of the electronic devices we depend on and often take for granted.
