The Advancing of the Colors by the VFW and the American Legion

November 11, 2009

The annual Elgin Public Veterans Day program was held November 11, 2009 at 11:00.  Because EHS was having their new bleachers installed the ceremony took place at the St. Boniface gym.  The Elgin VFW and American Legion advanced the colors.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the Junior Legion Auxiliary, the Elgin Public and St. Boniface Third Grades. Opening remarks were by EHS senior, Justin Kallhoff.  

The Elgin Public Band played "This is My Country" and "God Bless the U.S.A.".  EHS students Tyler Johnson and Brieann Grosserode recited a reading about the symbolism of the American Flag while Anthony Hemenway and Tre Henkenius demonstrated how to fold the flag.

EHS Principal, Jimmy Fenney was Master of Ceremonies and recognized the Veterans present.  He introduced Mr. Keith Heithoff who gave the Veterans Day Address.  Among things he discussed were; the different wars and conflicts the United States had fought, the different uniforms and meaning of the decorations worn by our military, order of the ranks and support given to our military by families and community.

Pope John students, Grant Beckman ad Greg Starman gave a patriotic reading followed by the Elgin Public and Pope John combined choir singing "In Flanders Field" and "She's More Than Just Another Flag".  Pope John student, Carey Eischeid, performed "Bringing Him Home" written by EHS alumni Amanda Miller.  Amanda is the daughter of Pope John music instructor, Mrs. Pat Miller.

The ceremony was concluded with the playing of "Taps" by EHS students Nash Schindler and Brett Kinney.  The American Legion and VFW retired the colors.  Veterans and Senior citizens were invited to have lunch at the Elgin Senior Center afterward.
