Regular February School Board Meeting

February 12, 2010, 7:30 PM
President Steve Heithoff called the regularly scheduled February 12, 2010 Board Meeting to order at 7:30 PM. Board members present were Kim Wells, Stan Heithoff, Ryan Reestman, Steve Heithoff, Mary Bauer and Laurie Waterbury. Also present were Superintendent Steve Dennis, Principal Jimmy Feeney, Tina Thiele-Blecher, Rita Heithoff, and Dennis Morgan of the Elgin Review.
President Heithoff led the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Heithoff reminded everyone that a copy of the Nebraska Open Meetings Law was posted in the meeting room.
School board meeting notice complied with Meeting Notice Policy #204.07.
Wells motioned and Bauer second to approve the Consent Agenda #5- Minutes of Previous Meeting,#6- Adopt the Agenda, #7- Financial Report, #8- Board Bills. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Principal Feeney reported on the Statewide Assessments, Student Led conferences, FCCLA Star, ordering track uniforms, the success of the NVC Basketball Tournaments, the score table panels that were installed and the 2010-2011 Fall Sports Schedules.
Special Recognition goes to the Wrestling Team on a Runner-Up Finish at the Neligh-Oakdale Wrestling Invitational, the Wrestling Team on a Third Place Finish at the Titan Wrestling Invitational, the Girls’ Basketball Team on a Runner-Up Finish at the NVC Tournament, Jennifer Rhoads on her selection to the Class D All State Honor Band, and Brieann Grosserode, Connor Kinney, Devin Brown, and Allen Miller on their selection to the UNK Honor Choir.
Waterbury moved and Stan Heithoff second to recognize the Elgin Education Association as the Bargaining Agent for the teaching staff. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Reestman motioned and Bauer second to approve the ESU 8 2010-2011 Special Education contracts. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Well motioned and Waterbury second to approve an option enrollment request for the 2010-2011 school year. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Stan Heithoff moved and Wells second to approve David Stairs as the driver’s education instructor and set the fee per student at $185.00. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Waterbury motioned and Stan Heithoff second to renew the contract of Principal Jimmy Feeney. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Bauer motioned and Reestman second to approve the REAP Grant Proposal to purchase new laptop computers. Motion carried, vote 6-0.
Superintendent Dennis reported on meetings attended by board members and himself (School Board Leadership, Labor Relations, and NSSRS). He also informed the board of other meetings in the coming weeks. He shared information on the Maps Testing (Measure of Academic Testing), the heating and cooling proposals, and the February Board Retreat which will be held on Monday, February 15th at 5:30 PM at the Plantation House.
The Board set Wednesday, February 24th,2010 as the date for a Personnel Hearing.
During a Buildings and Grounds report, Steve Heithoff shared a slide show of pictures with members of the Board. Items that need repaired or replaced were viewed. Priority items were discussed and many will be addressed this summer. Concrete and window replacement and long range improvements were also discussed.
Reestman moved and Bauer second to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried, vote 6-0. The meeting adjourned at 9:05 PM. The Board Retreat will be held Monday, February 15th at 5:30 PM at the Plantation House. The next regular meeting will be Tuesday, March 9th at 7:30 PM.
