2010 Niobrara Valley Conference Art Show

April 30th at Keya Paha

Michelle won the most ribbons with 8 that included a Judge's Merit for her photograph

The Elgin 8-12 Art students recently competed in the annual NVC Art Show hosted by Keya Paha at Springview.  Noel, Rose, Anthony and Sebastian arrived at school at 6:30AM to begin the two and half hour journey to the show.  Once they arrived at Springview they unloaded the van and displayed the artwork.  After all of the work was in place they participated in the art activity of creating a sculpture from tape in the style of Dale Chihuly, glass artist.  It only took four people an hour and a half  and 15 rolls of tape to create "Boom" as he was dubbed.  Their efforts earned them a blue ribbon.

After Boom was on display, it was time for lunch as the judging was completed.  Judging the high school work for this year's show was Chana Orton of Mill, NE and Pat Schemmer of Valentine.  Priscilla Porteneir of Springview, NE judged the junior high work.  They awarded Judge's Merit Awards (purple) for Outstanding work, blue for Superior, red for Excellent, yellow for Commendable and green for Honor Mention work. After the judging was complete the show was open to the public until 5:00.

After viewing the show and EHS's 57 ribbons, the students had the opportunity to visit with Mauro Fiore from Papillion, NE. via Skype, a live video, Internet call from his location in Detroit.  He is the Oscar winning cinematographer from the movie "Avatar".  We could watch him over the web and ask questions about his work, career and education background. He talked about his journey from photography to film work and from film school to Hollywood, the jobs related to the artistic side of the film industry, and following your passion in your career choice.  Mauro also answered questions from the art teachers and students.  When asked what was his favorite movie he helped with, he responded “Schindler’s List” and his most rewarding was “Avatar” for it’s advanced technology and earning him the 2010 Academy Awards Oscar for Best Cinematography. A big thank you to Mrs. Joan Swim, Keya Paha, art instructor for setting this up.

Finally it was time to pack up the show and begin the journey home.  With Boom pointing the way, we arrived back at Elgin at 7:30, unloaded and headed home after our long day.
