Preschoolers get down and dirty at science fair!
8th graders introduce little kids to the fun of science
The EPS 8th graders recently hosted the annual preschool science fair! The event began as the preschoolers were divided into small groups; they then traveled around the room to five different sessions hosted by the older students.
The 8th graders recently spent a few days preparing for the preschoolers' visit. They designed presentations with preschoolers in mind. They then practiced methods of explaining these simple science topics to simple science minds. Their hands-on projects were designed to keep the little kids involved and interested.
Student-designed sessions included the teaching of sound waves (using tuning forks as well as a string and can telephone--which the 8th graders were surprised worked as well), an introduction to polar/nonpolar substances (using milk, food coloring, and dish soap), and how air molecules behave when heated (using a balloon and warm air). Students also displayed how water and cornstarch mix together, as well as the reaction of pop and Menthos candies.
It was difficult to tell who had more fun--the preschoolers or the 8th graders! Overall it was a very memorable experience!
