2012 8th Grade Paper Mache

Tanner starts his sculpture by adding paper shoulders with masking tape

The 8th Grade have started the school year creating paper mache head and shoulder sculptures in Art class. They started with a styrofoam head for the base and using newspaper, added shoulders and features.

Students dip strips of newspaper into a water and glue mix
These were paper mached over with a glue and water mix to make them hard.  The students use tissues, paper towels and tape to add features to the face and give it an expression. After the sculpting is complete, the heads will be given a coat of gesso (white sealant) to give them a white background to decorate from.
Students create the features by taping tissues and paper towels onto the sculpture

After some touch up paper maching the sculptures will be ready for a coat of gesso to seal the sculpture and give it a white base for decorating

Decorating the sculptures is the final phase of the project. Stayed tuned for the finished results in a couple of weeks as color, hair and pattern are added.
