2012 Yearbook
schoolbook 2012
We're half way through the first quarter and the 2012 yearbook is under way. The staff consists of seven students this year which include; Senior, Danny Smith, Juniors,Ashlyn DeWald, Juliana Dunn, Angela Richart and Sophomore, Stephanie Bode, Abbi Couch and Allison Koenig. The first job they faced was choosing a theme for the book. They came up with "schoolbook 2012" which is a take on "facebook". They have been busy designing pages with a facebook template and theme.
The students also had to set the "ladder" which is the the yearbook layout and order the pages follow. After the ladder is set, specific pages for each student were assigned. Not only do they design the pages, they have to gather statistics, write-ups, rosters, photos and any other pertinent information for their pages.
To make things even more interesting this year we changed yearbook companies. We are now with Pictavo which meant all new software to learn. Several of the students and myself attended a workshop in Norfolk put on by Pictavo. We were introduced to the new software and all of the cool things it can do. Pictavo is an online company so the students can work from any computer with Internet access. The pages are completed online and all photos are taken with digital cameras and dropped onto the pages. Gone are the days of literally cutting and pasting write-ups and photographs onto the page and mailing them into the plant. We simply click a button and our pages are submitted.
Of course before those pages are submitted, thousands of pictures are taken, sorted and named. Students have to check the photos, delete any that are blurry, missed the action or just don't work for what they had in mind. Of the photos they keep, they have to decide what folder to store the photo in and who else might need the pictures. Once they keep a photo, it has to be named so we can easily find for a yearbook page, web article or a student folder. If it is a football photo it will be named FB for football, the name of the team played, the player and the action. So "FB-O-Nash, tackle" translates to Nash making a tackle in the Osmond football game. It's a lot of work but saves us a lot of time, especially at the end of the year when we literally have thousands of photos to look through. We average about 2000 photos in our yearbook. And that doesn't include what we use on the webpage.
Speaking of the webpage, the students also submit articles on the school website www.elgineagles.org . They all have to submit at least one article a month pertaining to some facet of school life at Elgin Public Schools. Be checking for the student view point of the happenings at EHS.
