2012 Paper Mache Decorating

Tanner applying the base to his cyclops design

The 8th grade have finished the structure part of their sculpture and have begun the final decorating phase of their project.  They applied a base color of acrylic paint to their project and let it dry.  They emphasized the features using a variety of mediums such as glue, glitter, colored sand, combinations of these or anything else they could think of such as Tiarra's broken CDs.

The tissue paper sheets are folded down to an inch and half width
After completing the face it was onto hair.  Most of the students chose tissue paper for the hair.  It offers a lot of colors, ease of use and looks good.  Students took a sheet of tissue and folded it until it was about an inch and half wide.  This way they could cut a strand of hair with a single snip of the scissors.  By angling the cut they could produce zigzag or wavy hair instead of straight.  Starting at the neck the strands of "hair" are individually glued in place with stick glue one strand at a time.  The student works the hair up a row at a time until they reach the top of the head.  It requires a lot of patience on the part of the student.

After the hair is completed the students checked for anything else that needed to be added before signing their name and school on the bottom of their sculpture.
